description

A blue and white porcelain tankard, so-called “Snelle”. The decoration in underglaze blue shows a landscape with two scholars and their servants, with a pine tree and rock in the background. At the bottom a wide rim with stylized motif, at the top a rim with ornaments, with a stylized cloud motif on the curve of the handle.
This is a typical example of Chinese export porcelain or Chine de Commande. A Dutch pewter jug ( Snelle) copied by the porcelain makers in China for the Dutch East India Company - VOC.
