Silver, Highlights, Amsterdam 750

description

Smoking, snuffing and chewing.
In the 18th century, a tobaccobox was an object many men carried with them. Tobacco was not only smoked or chewed but also ground into powder for snuffing, which had an invigorating effect. Snuff was kept in small boxes, which soon developed into a status symbol. Usually, these were made of less precious materials such as copper. But there were also examples made of silver and even gold. The more precious the snuff box, the more impression the possessor could make with it.

A collection of Dutch silver tobacco and snuff boxes

Over 30 different boxes come from 1 private collection and have been collected over the past 35 years. Many of the boxes are beautifully engraved, including biblical and important historical events of the time. There are boxes made of silver and gold; with tortoiseshell and beautifully carved mother-of-pearl plaques by, among others by the Amsterdam mother-of-pearl specialist Barckhuijsen. There are also rare snuff and scent boxes in the collection including one in the shape of a swan and a mule.
