description
This fabulous cake server is tangible proof of Johannes Schiotling’s craftmanship, to whose oeuvre the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam rightly devoted a stand-alone exhibition and publication in 1976/77. This cake server was exhibited there and depicted in the exhibition catalogue Johannes Schiotling, an Amsterdam silversmith (1730-1799) (no. 9).
Not many cake servers from the 18th century have been recorded. Two of them were made by Jan van 't Hofken in 1732 and 1734. Jan Diederik Pont made a cake server in 1739 and later one in 1762. Wilhelmus Angenendt, foreman at Schiotling’s workshop, made one in 1792 and one in 1772.
